Spirit of Hope Award

The Spirit of Hope Award, created in 2004, is a tribute and living legacy in honor of Joan Alexander for her stalwart commitment to eliminate stigma and increase understanding of mental health issues. Joan's courage in fighting for humane treatment and increased resources for people with mental illnesses lifts and leads her fellow advocates. This esteemed award is given in her honor on those rare occasions when an individual demonstrates Joan Alexander's indomitable spirit and her singular ability to convey hope to those living with mental illness. In the years since the inaugural award, the Spirit of Hope Award has significantly recognized only one other individual, Cheryl Burguières (posthumously in 2005).
