Mental Health Crisis Looms as Budget Cuts Continue

Last week I told you why funding for mental health programs is a top priority for Texas lawmakers – and for our community -- as the Legislature begins another session.

When lawmakers cut funding, which they did twice in the last decade, taxpayers in Harris County get stuck with the bill. This is because some of the people who go without treatment for mental illness because of budget cuts end up in our county jail. There they get treatment and stabilization – at a cost up to 15 times more than preventive care at public out-patient clinics.  Read Full Article.
