Mental Health and Substance Abuse Advocates Prepare for 83rd Legislative Session

Mental Health America of Greater Houston, Coalition of Behavioral Health Services, NAMI Metropolitan Houston and the Behavioral Hospital of Bellaire are jointly hosting a Behavioral Health Pre-Legislative Forum. This year’s event spotlights mental health issues that local mental health and substance abuse groups will advocate for during the 83rd Legislative Session; how advocates are improving access to mental health services and supports at the state legislative level; why the Surgeon General, National Institute of Medicine, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends an alcohol excise tax as one of the top ways to reduce underage drinking and how a twenty-five cent per drink increase of this consumption based fee can generate $2.2 billion every year for the Texas budget and education.
