Let's Let Tragedy Bring Us Together

The tragedy in Newtown, Conn. has brought the nation together once more. Communities nationwide are saddened by the loss of innocent lives and horrified that what is supposed to be a safe, protected environment where children can grow has had such a disaster occur. We are still trying to figure out what went wrong. The spotlight is shining on many difficult topics, and we are again reminded that we are all affected and that we must work together to find solutions. While it is not clear what role mental illness or intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) played in the Newtown shooting, the incident has sparked a conversation about the need for more access to mental health care. We must deal with untreated mental illness and the consequences that may impact the community at large.
