News: 85th Texas Legislative Session

(9/2017) - The 85th Texas Legislative Session officially came to a close on August 15th, following a Special Session which began July 18th with the Governor calling state legislators back to Austin to address 20 unresolved issues - including understanding Texas' rapidly rising rates of maternal mortality.

More than 15 bills relating to maternal mortality were filed, but only Senate Bill 17 by Senator Kolkhorst, Senator Huffman, and Senator Nelson made it to the governor’s desk. Senate Bill 17 ensures that the Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force is extended until September 1, 2023, and directs the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to evaluate options to address the most prevalent causes of maternal mortality - including options for treating postpartum depression in low-income women.

Mental Health America of Greater Houston is proud to have worked with Senator Kolkhorst to push for the behavioral health needs of moms in Texas along with Young Invincibles, a state-wide non-profit dedicated to increasing young adults’ access to healthcare.
