| Women's Mental Health |
Women are particularly vulnerable to depression, especially during their childbearing years. The statistics below give an idea of just how vulnerable. That’s why MHA Houston has a focus on women’s mental health, offering a brochure on perinatal mental health in three languages, a web-based course on postpartum depression and a focus on women’s mental health in the Houston community.
- Depression is the leading cause of disease-related disability among women.
- Compared to men, nearly twice as many women suffer from depression.
- About 1 in 4 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with depression in their lifetime
- Depression strikes more than 19 million U.S. adults each year, including about 12 million women.
- Depression occurs most often during women's childbearing years, ages 25-44.
- 8 out of 10 new mothers have the "Baby Blues."
- At least 1 out of 10 new mothers suffer from Postpartum Depression.
MHA Houston’s Women's Mental Health Initiative focuses on the need for public education on the common and treatable postpartum mental health symptoms. Whether you are a new mother, a concerned family member or a health professional, you may want to learn about Postpartum Depression (PPD) and other Postpartum Mental Illnesses. MHA Houston has developed educational materials to accomplish this.
Have you had a baby within the last year? Have you been feeling tired, sad, or overwhelmed? You can download our brochures above, "Your Emotions After Delivery," in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Also, view the Well Mom Checklist and find out what you need to do on a daily basis to take care of yourself. To order multiple copies of the brochure, please call 713-522-5161.
Remember that mothers who take care of themselves are able to take care of their children better. So, take care of yourself. Ask for help if you need it. Talk to your family and friends. Join a support group for new mothers. If you think you may be suffering from Postpartum Depression, see your physician or a mental health provider. For additional resources call Mental Health America of Greater Houston at 713-522-5161 (Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) for a referral. Seeking help when you need it will benefit both you and your family.
