| Pro Bono Counseling Program |
Mental Health America of Greater Houston wants to inform you of a free mental health and wellness resource we are providing in your community—The Pro Bono Counseling Program. This program, originally established in 2005 to address the needs of those who experienced the devastation, trauma and loss brought on by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, is offering individuals and families greater access to mental health services.
In a time when economic uncertainty and financial fears are high, it is important now more than ever to work together as a caring community to help those individuals and families experiencing higher than normal feelings of anxiety, depression, or stress to effectively deal with life’s challenges and get their lives or their family members’ lives back on track.
Eligibility
The Pro Bono Counseling Program is a free service for people of all ages and available to people who are unemployed, uninsured, underinsured or unable to afford counseling services. It is appropriate for individuals who are dealing with situations such as unemployment; career changes; life transition; depression, anxiety and stress; marital or family issues/concerns; life's everyday problems; anger management/conflict resolution; and grief and loss.
While this program is not appropriate for individuals with serious mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder, major depression and schizophrenia MHA Houston has other sources of information and referral to connect people in need with appropriate and available mental health services in the area.
How the Program Works
Individuals in need and/or a “helping organization” can contact The Pro Bono Counseling Program by phone at 713-522-5161 or by email at probono@mhahouston.org and speak with a referral specialist to determine eligibility. Once eligible, people in need are matched with a licensed counselor or therapist who will work with them to establish appointments and a plan for recovery. The Pro Bono Counseling Program is open to all people including parents, children, teens, singles, and families.
Please post and share the enclosed materials with your staff and with individuals who may benefit from our services. We also encourage you to distribute this information on your websites, newsletters, etc. and list us as a source for counseling referrals.
