Education Opportunities

MHA Houston offers the Houston community a number of key educational opportunities through forums, workshops, presentations and targeted training for professionals. We welcome inquiries about the programs below. Perhaps one will fill a need for you or your organization!

Responding Effectively: a Mental Health Curriculum

Due to cutbacks in funding for public mental health care, community health clinics and social service agencies that do not ordinarily focus on mental health increasingly must assist patients or clients experiencing mental health problems or serious mental illnesses. The MHA Houston Mental Health Curriculum provides an opportunity to increase the skills and knowledge base of both professionals and paraprofessionals providing direct services, who may have little knowledge about mental health care.

Responding Effectively: a Mental Health Curriculum, developed in collaboration with the Houston Psychiatric Society, features seven curriculum modules that can be presented separately:

  1. Mental Health Basics, which addresses symptoms and treatment of major mental disorders;

  2. Handling Mental Health Emergencies, which teaches participants how to recognize and respond to mental health emergencies;

  3. Accessing Community Mental Health Resources, which teaches participants how to locate a range of community mental health resources;

  4. Child and Adolescent Mental Health, which addresses symptoms of child and adolescent mental disorders and how to provide referrals to parents;

  5. Aging and Mental Health, which teaches participants how to recognize mental health problems in seniors; and

  6. Perinatal Mental Illnesses, which addresses the entire spectrum of perinatal mental illnesses, including the “baby blues,” postpartum depression, and postpartum psychosis.
Outreach to Seniors

As our population ages, mental health among the elderly is of mounting concern. MHA Houston’s Committee on Aging and Mental Health offers quarterly “Aging Well” seminars that are presented to seniors. These consist of a two-hour presentation and discussion about mental health and aging by two mental health professional speakers who discuss how to prevent mental health problems from developing, how to recognize mental health problems, and what to do if you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health problem.

Mental Health in Houston

MHA Houston, through its Information & Referral Service, as well as its advocacy activity, keeps an eye on how mental illness and mental health issues affect our entire community. As part of an effort to keep the public informed, MHA Houston makes presentations to community organizations on how the mental health system works and what happens when it falls short – and how this impacts every institution in our community. To schedule this presentation, contact MHA Houston at 713-523-8963.
