Meet Our Veterans Behavioral Health Peer Services Coordinator 

Valerie James joins Mental Health America of Greater Houston as its Veteran Behavioral Health Peer Services Coordinator. James served ten years in the U.S. Army, supervised a 45-member staff on a 36-bed inpatient psychiatric unit at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and deployed to Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. Upon discharge, she performed street outreach and also case management for over 200 veterans at U.S. VETS. James is a graduate from the University of Houston Downtown and has a Bachelor's in Psychology. 


Meet Our Veterans Treatment Court  and Wellness Coordinator

Spencer Walker is a 4th generation combat veteran and the first United States Marine in his family. He served on active duty from 1999-2003 as a Counter Battery Radar Operator, and deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom with the Regimental Combat Team 5 in 2003. Walker’s commendations include a Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, and Iraq Campaign Medal. Walker earned a Bachelor of Science with Highest Honors in Criminal Justice and Geographic Information Systems from Sam Houston State University in May 2006.  In May 2016, Spencer graduated from the Harris County Veterans Treatment Court Program and now serves as the Veterans Treatment Court and Wellness Coordinator at Mental Health America of Greater Houston. He is passionate about actively engaging warriors in their own journey of healing and recovery and providing hope, as countless others have done for him.
