In the 84th Texas Legislative Session, the Harris County School Behavioral Health Initiative at Mental Health America of Greater Houston through its collaborative partners will advocate for the following priorities:

  • Full formula funding for public education programs

  • Compensation for training required by Senate Bill 460 (83rd Legislative Session, 2013).  SB 460 mandates school personnel be trained in identifying and signs and symptoms of mental health issues among students as well as strategies for helping students in need of assistance and intervention

  • Increase funding for Mental Health First Aid and other prevention programs such mental health literacy, personal safety, and suicide prevention

  • Extend mandate for SB 460 to include behavioral health training for Pre-K, K, and elementary educators

  • Provide funding for campus-based school mental health professionals
