Veterans Resource Connection Day

(formerly known as TAPS)

The City of Houston Office of Veterans Affairs (COHOVA) has developed a transition assistance program in partnership with the Department of Veteran Affairs, the Texas Veteran Commission, and the Lone Star
Veterans Association (LSVA) called Houston's Veteran Resource Connection Day. We have teamed up with the various local non-profit, governmental, and for-profit organizations to better serve our soon to separate, newly separated, and at-risk veteran population.

The Veteran Resource Connection Day (VRC) is replacing the TAP seminar; the goal of VRC day is to give members of our active, reserve, guard, separated veterans, and their families' information on their state and federal benefits, employment and education opportunities.

The Greater Houston area has one of the largest veteran populations in the nation. COHOVA is dedicated to ensuring veterans and their families know what benefits they are entitled to, and with this program, we will give them the information needed to utilize these benefits. Many veterans return home and face the challenge of transition; this program will make that transition a little easier.

According to the latest Department of Labor report, approximately 20 percent of those veterans aged 18-24 leave active duty and find themselves unemployed. Considering these statistics, the COHOVA has decided to have monthly VRCs in order to ensure that we help as many veterans in the Greater Houston Area make a successful transition from the military lifestyle back to the civilian life. Our goal is to give a more streamlined and user friendly program than what is currently offered to transitioning military, letting them seek the services provided by local personnel that are tailored to their individual needs.

The VRC will be divided into three parts; a morning session lasting from 9 AM until Noon, and an afternoon networking session from 12PM until 4PM that will be tailored to the individual needs of the veteran. The morning session will feature presentations from local subject matter experts representing on the
various benefits that veterans are entitled to. Lunch will be dedicated to networking, giving the veterans an opportunity meet new people and gain more information on the various programs featured in the morning session. The afternoon session will feature resource tables, which will allow the veterans to pursue information based on their individual needs.

COHOVA and the LSVA have teamed up to host the VRC, which is free to all veterans. It is a one day event and it will be held Wednesday, August 28th, 2013 from 9 AM until 1 PM. It will be held at:

     Lone Star Veterans Association
     Main Administrative Building
     170 Heights Blvd
     Houston, TX 77007

The VRC will cover veteran benefits, healthcare, education, employment, state and local veteran information, and in the afternoon there will be two companies in attendance looking to hire veterans.
