Mental Health Summit

Mental Health America of Greater Houston (MHA) is joining forces with the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) for the Mental Health Summit to support coordination of recovery-based care between the VA and community partners for veterans and families.

The Mental Health Summit is designed to enhance and establish relationships between the MEDVAMC and community partners throughout the Southeast region in an effort to better address the broad mental healthcare needs of veterans and their families.

"This is a step that Houston and Harris County needs to take to better coordinate and address the mental health needs of service members, veterans and their families," said Tony Solomon, Director of the Veterans Behavioral Health Initiative at Mental Health America of Greater Houston. "MHA, the MEDVAMC and the community understand the importance and limitless benefits that coming together to support increased access to care, family advocacy and peer support can bring to individuals and families."

During the Summit, community stakeholders will have opportunities to dialogue with MEDVAMC to establish more positive, collaborative outcomes that benefit service members, veterans and their families during the difficult transition from the military to the civilian world.

Participants will learn about implementing recovery principles into practice, integration of formal mental health treatment with non-traditional forms of support, and through breakout sessions strategize on improving and mapping systems to better engage veterans and family members.

The Summit will also include information and strategies on resource sharing; increasing referrals; public awareness; education and training on the mental health needs of veterans and their families; and identifying community-based programming and services to support mental health and transition assistance needs of veterans and their families

"The Mental Health Summit is a timely opportunity for the VA and community partners in our area to enhance or forge new efforts that better addresses the broad mental health care needs of the service members, veterans and families that call our area home," said Susan Fordice, President and CEO of Mental Health America of Greater Houston.
